‘We Hid Under The Bed Until Friday Morning’

Ledua Qalo of Dreketi, Macuata Province was in tears as she sat down for hours looking at the damage to her house caused by Cyclone Yasa on Thursday night.
The mother-of-two children said her one-bedroom house was completely destroyed.
“It happened so quickly that we couldn’t save anything,” Mrs Qalo said.
“My husband, children and I hid under the bed until Friday morning.”
Seven-year-old Rosa Ligamasei held her mother’s hand telling her to leave the house and move to another place.
“I don’t know what to do; whether to move to my parent’s place in Seaqaqa or clean the house,” the 30-year-old mother said.
“It is very hard to explain to the kids what needs to be done now because we don’t have enough money to fix the house and travel to Seaqaqa.”
Her husband is a root crop farmer. His farm produce was also destroyed by the flood.
Few kilometers from her house was Dreketi Primary School, Dreketi Central College and Maramarua District School which were all destroyed by Cyclone Yasa.
