100-Year-Old Villager Loses Home

100-year-old woman ran to her village’s community hall for safety last Thursday as Cyclone Yasa blew down her home.
Like many victims of Yasa, Masilina of Natokelau Village in Bua Province lost everything.
She was staying with her two children, both in their 60s, when the cyclone struck.
Ms Masilina was in the kitchen when the roof blew away.
With the help of her children, she managed to make it to the village hall for shelter.
“I am still in shock as this was the first time I had this experience,” she said.
“Everyone in my village had prepared themselves on Wednesday, but no one knew that things will be destroyed in hours.”
She said due to landslides, there can be no transportation to the village at the moment.
“I don’t have groceries, water and clothes, at this age I cannot do much, but waiting for the assistances,” she said.
“I am thankful that the villagers here have survived and no one is injured.
“My prayers to all other Fijians who have lost their loved ones during this time.”
