The rapist pastor who fled the High Court before his sentencing but surrendered himself over the weekend told the court why he ran away.

Ravinesh Chand was sentenced to 14 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 11 years by Justice Daniel Goundar last Wednesday.

He told the court that he became afraid when he was handed his judgment.

Yesterday, he appeared in a white shirt, black sulu and yellow necktie, the standard wear for convicted prisoners in public.

On Sunday, Chand surrendered himself to Korolevu Community Police Post in Sigatoka after a five-day manhunt operation was conducted by the Police officers.

He was convicted for three counts of rape and one count of sexual assault.

He raped and molested a 15-year-old girl who was his church member on March 21, 2019, at an isolated place in Nausori.

Justice Goundar said the reason he called Chand to court was to question why the court should not hold him in contempt of court for deliberately absconding bail.

Chand pleaded guilty to contempt of court and was penalised for one month imprisonment consecutive to his 14 year imprisonment term.
