A family in Dreketi, Macuata, had to crawl under the house and sit in flooded waters for about eight hours to shelter themselves from the wrath of Tropical Cyclone Yasa.

Ashnay Prasad, a research field officer of the Ministry of Agriculture said it was a nightmare.

“My four-year-old son, Edwin, suffered from cold for few days as his feet were in the water,” Mr Prasad said.

“My wife, Mereoni Kuruvakasiga held our two-year-old daughter, Lilly Somoi, while I held my mother’s hand (Roshni Lata) making sure no one was taken away by the wind.”

The 29-year-old of Muanidevo said their three bedroom’s roof was blown away and part of the house also.

“If we stayed in the house we could have died.

“I hold my family dearly and that is why we left everything and crawled under the floor.”

He said the strong wind lasted from 6:30pm till 2am last Thursday.

“I tried to go back to collect warm clothes for my children but the wind was too strong and could have carried me away from my family,” he said.

“Making decision at that hour was so crucial. I just thank God for keeping us all alive.”
