A Tabia house that was destroyed by Cyclone Yasa.

A 52-year-old sugarcane farmer of Tabia said his family members stayed under their bed and waited for the cyclone to pass.

Jakir Hussein said he had never experienced a category five cyclone.

He said the strong winds was like the sound of a machine moving towards his home.

“My wife and children were so scared, I told them to go under the bed as it was the only safe place to go to,”Mr Hussein said.

He did not sleep the whole night making sure that his family members were safe.

He said roofs were blown off, livestock were killed and farms were also destroyed.

“It is now a difficult time and it would take time for most of us to recover especially for those who have lost their jobs because of the COVID-19 pandemic,” he said.

He was thankful to the Make a Difference-Fiji team for the timely assistance of $350 worth of essential items including food.
