Visitors at Vadravadra village in Gau stood amazed as villagers participated in the annual yavirau or traditional fish drive.

The Naveivarati clan led the drive.

Mataqali Naveivarati leader, Leatasi Waqasaqa said the first fish drive took place on Christmas eve and a second one on Monday – in preparation for new year celebrations.

The first yavirau took place at the mataqali fishing grounds.  A taboo was placed on the fishing grounds for over a year.

“This was part of our preparation for relatives visiting from Suva, Nadi and Bua.

“They were all surprised at the amount of fish that were caught.”

Clan members collected forest vines (walai) and coconut leaves at least two days before the drive.

On the day of the yavirau, visitors were also encouraged to take part.

Mr Waqasaqa said most of them just stood there and took videos and photos.

“One of our visitors did not catch a fish (ta) properly and was injured in the process. Otherwise, the whole experience is something they will talk about for the rest of their lives.

“Our family from Bua now want to stay and watch the tide come in and go out.

“They are tired of watching the still waters of their river.”

The fish caught over the two days were distributed to families in the village.

There are five clans in Vadravadra village.
