Man Allegedly Raped 10-Yr-Old At Evacuation Centre Remanded

A 20-year old farmer who allegedly raped a 10-year-old at an evacuation centre in the North has been remanded in custody.

He appeared before Magistrate Bimsara Jagodage yesterday at the Labasa Magistrate Court charged with two counts of rape.

The court heard that on the 30th of December, 2020 after Tropical Cyclone Yasa, the victim’s family had taken shelter at the evacuation centre.

The accused allegedly raped the victim in the washroom of the evacuation centre.

The Court heard that it was allegedly the second time the victim had been raped. She was allegedly raped for the first time when she was six years old.

Police Prosecutor Corporal Vignesh Prasad explained that evacuation centres are provided for those in need of shelter and protection and people shouldn’t take advantage of the situation.

“We need to protect the young generation and not victimise them.”

The man was denied bail and his case will be heard at the High Court on February 8.
