While the New Year would be a celebration for many Fijians, it has turned bleak for Mohammed Shaneez, 30, and his six-year-old son; Mohammed Zeeshan.

On Friday afternoon their three-bedroom home near Namotomoto Village, was destroyed by fire.

Mr Shaneez said he was behind with his rent payment because he was currently unemployed, and on Friday, he was told to vacate house.

He said that some drunk men claiming to be landowners forced them to vacate the house.

“I called my sister and she had agreed for us to move to her place.”

He added that when he returned from unloading his items at his sister’s place, he was shocked to see his house was on fire.

“I was shocked and at the same time I was angry because my bed, my TV and other stuff were in the house,” he said.

“After my wife had left me, I took care of my son with the support of my family and relatives. My rent is pending because currently I am not employed.”

The estimated cost of damage is about $35,000.

Mr Shaneez said he had lodged a Police report. Police have confirmed receiving the report as investigation continues.

The National Fire Authority is also investigating to determine the cause of the fire.
