The Government is working on a timeline to ensure that schools are ready for the new term.

Minister for Defence, National Security and Policing, Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu said they had identified 32 schools as a priority for the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Australian Defence Force Engineers to construct temporary shelters.

“It is important that we have access to the schools and next is to bring in the engineers to work on the temporary shelters and temporary classrooms.”

He said that they were also focussing on restoring water and electricity supplies to these schools.

Mr Seruiratu added that so far, the Ministry of Education had completed assessing 75 schools out of the 85 affected schools.

“We’re thankful to some community members and individuals who are also putting their hands up in the provision of some materials to assist us in the rebuilding of our schools.”
