The Australian Government yesterday handed over electrical networking materials to Energy Fiji Limited to boost its rehabilitation works in Vanua Levu following the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Yasa.

Australia’s Counsellor for Development Co-operation, Joanna Houghton said it was part of Australia’s broader response to assist Fiji with its recovery efforts.

“This is a commitment of $7.1 million (AUD $4.5 million) in humanitarian relief complementing the deployment of HMAS Adelaide,” Ms Houghton said.

“Following the cyclone, we co-ordinated with the Fijian Government on the provision of essential material and equipment to allow rehabilitation of the damaged infrastructure.

“A key priority was the electricity network.”

She said the Australian Government was happy to be able to assist in bringing in the essential items quickly.

“As part of our response package, we were able to rapidly procure the requested materials and have them transported on board HMAS Adelaide and on Australian Defence Force humanitarian relief flights to Fiji.

“The disruptions in the global supply chains caused by COVID-19 would likely have caused delays in procurement of equipment.

“EFL plays a critical role in the development of Fiji – from ensuring our health centres and hospitals are able to operate efficiently to the critical role it plays in children’s education.”
