Father of three Samisoni Vananikuila says he is happy that the Government has resolved one of his two immediate priorities.

He learned yesterday that he could send his children to school without a uniform, school bag and footwear.

And they would get assistance when the children attend school.

His second priority is to find building materials to rebuild his house destroyed by Cyclone Yasa in Valebasoga, Labasa. He is appealing for help.

Originally from Nasau, Navakasiga in Bua, Mr Vananikuila, 53, moved with his family to join his older brother Apakuki Bolamasei, 55, at Valebasoga a few years ago. He was followed by their nephew Maciu Rokotora, 37.

The three are sugarcane labourers at Valebasoga, Labasa, and had built their houses there. Mr Bolamasei and Mr Rokotora have five children each.

At the height of Cyclone Yasa on December 17, they with their wives and 10 children joined Mr Vananikuila’s family at the Valebasoga Secondary School evacuation centre for safety.

When they returned the next day they found all three houses had been destroyed by the cyclone and household items soaking wet and scattered.

Mr Vananikuila recently secured a tent for his family.

“I came from Bua thinking we would have a better life in Labasa,” Mr Vananikuila said.

“I never thought that Category Five cyclones can take everything away from us.”

All three families live in makeshift shelters and are appealing for assistance because they have no money to rebuild their lives.
