Greenstar, Kasavu In Semis

The Nadi champion will hope Yalalevu beat Northpole today to qualify for the semis.

The Setareki Hughes captained- Kasavu Football Club started their Vodafone National Regional Club Championship campaign with a 2-0 victory over Press FC at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka yesterday.

And their clash against Greenstar today would be a formality as both teams have qualified for thew semifinals next week.

This was after the Lambert Sarju-coached Press team lost their second match going down to Greenstar 1-3 on Friday.

And in the second match, Nalovo FC bounced back from a 0-1 loss to Yalalevu on Friday to beat Suva league champions Northpole 2-0.

What happened: Kasavu FC loaded with the cream of the Rewa district players scored through Patrick Joseph in the first half.

Prominent players Simione Tamanisau, Kavaia Rawaqa, Anish Khem, Peniame Drova, Josateki Tamudu and Bruce Hughes played for Kasavu.

Few minutes into the match, Kasavu was handed a penalty when Gabriele Matanisiga was brought down in the box by Earon Reddy.

But Bruce Hughes shot hit the crossbar.

Press FC worked tirelessly to to find the equaliser through Zibraaz Sahib, Epeli Kosa, Finau brothers Sekove and Peni but failed.

The Rewa champion sealed the win the 81st minute when Matanisiga scored from a header beating goalkeeper Viliame Tabucala.

Comments: Kasavu FC coach Mohammed Nizam said: “We had a good start to qualify for the semi-final. We will treat a game a game a time. We had the experience and the depth and we need to continue winning as we want the title.”

Press FC captain Zibraaz Sahib said: “It was an uphill battle, we missed crucial opportunities in the match. We were unlucky but there’s always next time.

Fixtures Today: 1pm Yalalevu-Northpole; 3pm Kasavu-Greenstar.
