$7m Plus Electricity Damage After Yasa

Repairs and restoration of electricity by Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) post Tropical Cyclone Yasa may cost them $7 million to $8 million.
This was revealed by chief executive officer Hasmukh Patel in a press conference yesterday.
Mr Patel said the costs might be slightly less or more but it would be around that figure.
“At this stage we are targeting to finish all our restoration works in the Northern division by January 31,” Mr Patel said.
“The weather in Labasa has been a lot of rain and that has deterred our progress, because for three to four hours in a day they are experiencing rain in the North,” he said.
“The safety of our staff is also a priority and we are ensuring that they work in the best of conditions.”
He said the EFL team would have a better idea of a certain date where all works will be completed by this weekend.
He has urged Fijians in the Northern division to be patient as their team work round the clock to restore 10 per cent of power in heavily affected areas.
“We don’t have unlimited resources and we are working hard with the resources that we have,” he said.
With 150 authority workers being deployed to the North before Christmas, Mr Patel emphasised that they did not want quick short-term fixes but were working towards a long-term one.
