Students of Rahmatullah Khan Memorial School in Maro, Sigatoka, will start this school year with new desks and stationeries.

The donation by the descendants of the late founder of the school, Mr Khan, was a huge help for parents of the school.

Most of the schools parents are laid-off workers of the InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa.

Sanasana Village headman, Epeli Ganilau, whose wife was also laid off, said: “All my five children were educated in this primary school. Three of them are in secondary school, and two are still attending the primary school.

“After my wife was laid off, we have been praying for God’s help with our children’s back to school stationery for this year.

“The assistance by the Khan family was an answer to our prayer.”

Another parent, Silika Rakuro, whose husband was also laid off, said half of their burden was lifted through the assistance.

“We thank God for such a blessing from the late Khan family.

“I have only one child, who is a student of this school, and I am grateful that the provision has eased some of our family loads.”

School head teacher Ramiza Hussein said the Khan’s family assistance was a great gesture in these trying times.

The school has a roll of 270 students.

RKM School building was established by the Khans brothers in 1940.

In 1957, the six Khan trustees representing their parents, together with four other local trustees, passed the property to the management of the school.
