The Nausori Town Council and Fiji Corrections Services will soon sign off on a deal confirming the acquisition of a two-acre land for the new Nakasi Market.

Nausori special administrator Uma Kant Patel said the new market site would be at Adi Davila Road next to RB Southpoint, opposite Nakasi Health Centre.

“It’s a little over two acres and will house a market, small businesses and have parking space. We thank the Ministry of Local Government and Minister Premila Kumar for assisting us in acquiring this place from Fiji Corrections Service,” Mr Patel said.

“Basically we will sub lease the land from the Fiji Corrections Services and the deal is almost in its final stages. Expect a new modern market which is compliant in every way.

“Water, power, good toilet facilities, ample parking space, proper disposal of rubbish and most importantly clean and hygienic.

“Unlike the road side where produce is exposed to fume, carbon released from cars and all sorts of pollution.”

Relocating roadside vendors

In the meantime, the Town Council is serious about relocating roadside vendors.

Starting from December last year, enforcement teams from the council have been removing and relocating the vendors.

The structures constructed by the vendors are illegal and unsafe.

Vendors at Makoi in front of Hansons Supermarket were served notice to clear the area as well.

“All these vendors are relocated at either Laqere, Vunidogo or the Nausori market. They are to simply contact the market master at Laqere market or at Nausori,” Mr Patel said.

“Vendors at Makoi and along Ratu Dovi Road are relocated at Laqere  and those at Nakasi (Tebara Plaza) are relocated at Nausori Market.”
