More than 300 households in the Macuata Province will benefit from the assistance by COVID-19 Mitigation and Preparedness project in the Pacific.

The USAID (United States Agency for International Development) funded project targets 11 communities in Macuata.

This in patnership with ADRA (Adventist Developmeant and Relief Agency) Fiji.

Distributions of assistance began over the weekend.

Project manager Seini Gucake said some of the project funds were redirected towards their Cyclone Yasa response.

Cakaudrove and Bua are also on their list.

The assistance included agriculture materials such as wheelbarrow, green house nettings, cane knife, files, forks, blade, seedlings and trays, chain saw, protective wear, spray can, organic chemicals and hose pipes.

Each community is also given a mobile hand washing station to be used in community halls and/or church to reduce the risk of COVID-19.

As for coastal communities, they are given fishing gears such as nets, fishing lines and other necessities.

Wailevu Village headman, Josaid Nawaqavolau said they were grateful for the timely assistance.

“In Wailevu, we have a total of 90 households. While there were no damage to our homes, our farms were destroyed, affecting our food security. The Agricultural Ministry is of great help to us.”

The distribution in Macuata will continue this week.

The team was in Koro Island last week distributing assistance to about 14 villages.
