A family in Davuilevu is in distress after their four-bedroom home and belongings were all lost in a fire on Thursday night.

The incident occurred before curfew while the home’s occupants were fast asleep.

Paula Koro Junior said he was at home with his two brothers and a cousin when they were awoken by black smoke.

Before going to bed, the boys had lit candles in the living room after a lightning bolt struck taking out the house’s lights.

Mr Koro believes a candle may have fallen from its stand and onto the rugs which caught fire.

“We rushed out and tried to put out the flames but by then we had no water to put out the flames,” he said.

With his mother recovering from an illness in hospital and sister caring for her, he is pleading with members of the public for assistance in helping their family recover. Neighbours say efforts to contact the National Fire Authority (NFA) were unsuccessful and resulted in a neighbour running to the fire station for help.

By the time fire trucks arrived, the home was engulfed in flames and there was nothing to save.

Efforts to get the authority’s comments were unsuccessful before this edition went to press.
