Fwcc Male Advocate Talks On Police Work With Women Victims Of Violence

Police officers ran to a woman’s aid from the Police station in Suva because there was no vehicle at the time.

This was revealed by Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre Male Advocate Tevita Seruilumi at the Fiji Police Community Policing Symposium.

He said the Police officers realized the urgency and desperation in the woman’s voice and ran to her aid.

Mr Seruilumi said these were the type of reactions needed to keep women safe from violence.

He highlighted another incident where a male perpetrator was claiming to be the victim, but the officers were trained to recognize who it was that was really in trouble.

Mr Seruilumi said community policing concepts must be proactive and ensure crime is prevented.

He said while the crisis center was being a critic of the Fiji Police Force, they have worked hand-in-hand with the officers in creating a violence-free environment for women.

Mr Seruilumi said there was a need for some Police officers to change their approach when adhering to complaints.

“We have had reports where the women have been told that they could also be charged. This makes the woman think twice about reporting the matter,” he said.

“Despite the no drop policy, women in trouble have had such encounters where they are made to feel like they are not the victim.”

Mr Seruilumi said the nation could do with an effective community policing strategy because prevention was always better than cure.
