The review of the archaic Police Act will begin next Friday as Fiji hopes to establish a National Crime Prevention Board by the end of the year.

Minister for Defence Inia Seruiratu while making comments at the Fiji Police Force Community Policing Symposium said this was part of the things that needed to be fast tracked.

He said The Police Act of 1965 was archaic and many at times criminals were finding ways of navigating around it.

He said the review would need community input as well.

“Children are being used in criminal activities. The people using them said that under the Child’s Act, they cannot be detained or investigated,” Mr Seruiratu said.

“These are the things we encounter because of the archaic laws that we have.”

Former Commissioner of Police, Iowane Naivalurua, said the National Crimes Prevention Board was a concept that he was looking forward to.

“It had to be Fiji made and relevant to Fiji and so it can be used in Fiji. It must be inclusive and relevant so the right proper advice can be given to the minister,” Mr Naivalurua said.

“It should not be dealing with mundane things. It is about the futuristic fight against crime, this is the way forward.

“We must avoid all the bureaucracies. I suggest the minister has an open-door policy so he can tell what is happening about crime at a political level.”

Meanwhile, Mr Seruiratu also highlighted that there was a need to increase police personnel to 8000 compared to the current 3000 officers we have now.

“This is something that we are looking at from ministerial and national level,” he said.
