Police: Five People Still Missing

A man is the latest missing person after being swept away by strong currents while attempting to cross a flooded river in Waikubukubu in Tavua yesterday.

Police spokesperson Savaira Tabua confirmed that the incident happened yesterday afternoon while the man was attempting to make his way home.

Four others remain missing at sea from earlier reports.

The cases are:

  •  Fisher Aisea Rokodau, 45, and Seruvi Walu, 18, have not been home since January 22. They were reported missing on Wednesday. The pair were returning onboard a fibreglass boat from Cikobia Island to their village at Vunikodi in Udu Point, Cakaudrove.
  •  On Thursday two were reported missing after they failed to return from a fishing trip around near Nukulau Island.

Bad weather led to the suspension of the searches for the two missing at Nukulau and also the two missing in Cikobia.

Police Chief Operations Officer Assistant Commissioner of Police Abdul Khan said it was important to make decisions with the weather in mind.

Five rescued by Police

Meanwhile five men were rescued from the Tavua waters on Thursday in a joint effort by the Fiji Police and Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

Ms Tabua said the men had gone fishing in Tavua waters when they developed engine problems and the matter was reported by family members to the Tavua Police Station.
