Lorraine Seeto has been appointed as the Pacific Corporate Governance Institute (PCGI) General Manager Suva.

The former central banker and advisor to the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji, officially joined PCGI under International Finance Corporation (IFC) on February 1.

Following queries sent to IFC it is understood that Ms Seeto was selected following a competitive process that yielded 52 applicants from across the region.

Ms Seeto said: “It is an honour to be appointed to lead PCGI at a time when corporate governance is so important as businesses work to address and recover from the impacts of COVID-19.

“The pandemic may have caused economic shocks, but it has not changed the fiduciary duty of boards, which makes PCGI’s work critical in Fiji’s economic recovery.”

Board
Chairperson of the Board of PCGI Joel Abraham said they are pleased that Ms Seeto has come on board and look forward to her adding value to PCGI.

“With her wealth of knowledge as a former central banker and her extensive network, we intend to bring practical programmes to PCGI so that our participants can benefit and take good corporate governance practices and implement them in their workplaces.” Mr Abraham highlighted that PCGI also intends to work with other professional institutes in Fiji and the region to enhance corporate governance structures.

“The role of the PCGI is to advance the agenda on good governance and bring about tangible change in how entities conduct themselves from a governance standpoint, both in the public and private sector.”

About PCGI
With the endorsement of the Reserve Bank of Fiji, PCGI was established in November 2017 by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, through the support of the Australian and New Zealand Governments through the Fiji Partnership.

“We are seeing a strong appetite by the Fijian business community to learn more about corporate governance,” said IFC’s Resident Representative for Fiji, Kiribati, Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu, Deva De Silva.

“Good corporate governance is a critical component for the development of any organisation.”

“It is important for an entity to improve their corporate governance practices if they’re seeking to expand, raise finance, foster stronger ties with other potential partners or develop a smooth succession plan.”

PCGI is now operating as an independent non-profit organisation, with a clear mandate to promote principles of good corporate governance to companies in Fiji and operate as a centre of excellence for corporate governance in the broader Pacific region.

Since its establishment, PCGI has been expanding new (virtual) training offerings that respond to market needs.

Due to COVID-19, face to face training sessions have been temporarily replaced with webinar trainings which, have been tremendously popular and have attracted interest from around the Pacific.

The next webinar series which kicks off next month will focus on board leadership; gendered workforce, impacts of COVID-19 and cybersecurity.

To date, over 750 participants have attended over 20 Corporate Governance training or awareness events through PCGI.
