A hobby for cooking turned into a business venture for Dylan Ou when COVID-19 hit Fiji.

Mr Ou runs a small business online called Ou’s Treat where he is able to sell Asian delicacies at a reasonable price.

“I want people to try the different delicacies – I want them to be able to eat the kind of food I eat at home,” he said.

The delicacy he specialises in is kimchi, a staple in Korean cuisine of salted and fermented vegetables.

“I had started the venture from my home in Suva in hopes to get people to try new delicacies and also earn a little pocket money at the same time. Initially, I started making ‘kimchi’ just as a hobby during the lockdown but quickly, I started receiving positive feedback from my friends and family and in no time, the word had reached numerous people.

“Soon I began getting requests to make kimchi for friends, so I thought, why not earn a little from my hobby?”

Fresh Products
He said he currently makes around four to five kilograms of kimchi on average per week which he then supplies to the Kundan Singh Supermarkets in Pacific Harbour and Suva for sales.

“I am thankful for Kundan Singh Supermarket for being the first retailer to support my kimchi business.”

Mr Ou added he had also diversified into making wontons and dumplings, both Chinese dishes which generally consists of minced meat and chopped vegetables wrapped into a piece of dough skin.

“I take orders for dumplings and wontons so it is fresh when it reaches my customers.

“Usually, with food such as that, storage is a bit complicated for long term basis which is why I am not supplying it to the supermarkets yet.”

He highlighted all products used for his dishes were locally produced.

“I believe in providing fresh food to my customers so it is basically out of the farm, and on the table.”
