Let’s Go Local: Naigani Island on Artist’s Bucket List
Alifereti Malai.

Alifereti Malai’s life represents the same vibrance as the pieces he paints.

Mr Malai is an award-winning artist – the recipient of major art awards in Fiji including the;
– National Fine Arts Award,
– Craftsman of the Year Award,
– Indigenous Art Award,
– Masquerade ‘Body Art’,
– International Diploma Art award
– Artist of the Year award in 2019

The Ra native said he had been producing art for around 40 years.

Mr Malai has also represented Fiji at Art Festivals around the Pacific and has exhibited in New Caledonia, New Zealand and Australia.

“Art is more than a talent; it soothes my soul, gives me satisfaction, peace of mind and mends my busting ego,” he said.

What Are Your Hobbies?
My hobbies include farming, reading and traveling.

How Many Places Have You Visited So Far In Fiji?
I’ve visited quite a few places in Fiji and its beauty never ceases to amaze me.

What Is The One Spot You Would Take Every Visitor To, And Why?
There is no other better place to go to than my two villages; Nukulau in Nalawa, Ra, and Roma in Naboubuco, Naitasiri, up in the highlands.

There, we have untouched forests, pure fresh air and water, waterfalls – simply nature with its beauty and spirits.

We are farmers – we toil the land, hunt wild pigs and drink our ‘kava’.

That’s the best place I’ll take every visitor to.

What Is Your Favourite Secret Backyard Spot?
The Fiji Museum and Thurston Garden in Suva.

It is quiet, peaceful and a great place for relaxation.

What Is Your Favourite Place In Fiji For A Pie/Coffee?
The Governors Café in Knollys Street and Ginger Kitchen at the Fiji Museum, Thurston Gardens – both in Suva.

For Ginger Kitchen café, the environment is serene and I can take off my shoes, feel the cool breeze from the trees and also the seaside winds.

What Is The One Fiji Spot On The Top Of Your Bucket List?
I would love to visit the island of Naigani in the Lomaiviti Group.

I believe it is one of the most beautiful places in the Pacific.
