Minister Looks Into Water Supply Woes At Lekutu, Galoa
Minister for Infrastructure and Meteorological Services and Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Jone Usamate with Lekutu Secondary School principal Avinendra Kumar during a discussion at the school on February 6, 2021.

Consistent water supply to Lekutu Secondary School and Galoa Island in Bua after Tropical Cyclones Yasa and Ana is a major concern, says Minister for Infrastructure and Meteorological Services and Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Jone Usamate.

Mr Usamate has called on authorities to address the water issue immediately with school soon to reopen in the province.

He said the Water Authority of Fiji team would have to cart water to the school daily once school starts and if the problem is not rectified.

“If water won’t come from the main source then the water authority has to continue with water carting.”

The minister said apart from water issues; the ministry would be looking at restoring power supply in teachers’ quarters.

Galoa Island

In Galoa Island, the solar system was severely affected by TC Yasa. Since then a number of solar systems have been out of order and being repaired.

The water supply on the island has also been affected.

Mr Usamate said the interim solution to solve the water woes was for the ministry to dig a borehole on the island.

“We will be sending a team from the Ministry of Mineral Resources to see whether it can be done or not,” Mr Usamate said.

“In the meantime we will try to repair the cement water tank which is located on the hill and do water carting to the schools in Galoa Island.”
