A man who is alleged to have set fire to the Saint Giles Psychiatric Hospital last Thursday, has been remanded in custody by the Magistrates Court in Suva.

Vereamu Navuso appeared in custody before Magistrate Jeremiah Savou yesterday.

Navuso was seen walking with bandages on his feet.

Police prosecutor served a full phase of disclosures to the accused.

Navuso is charged with one count each of arson and acts with intent to cause grievous harm.

It is alleged that on February 4, 2021, at Suva, Navuso set fire to the hospital on Reservoir Road in Suva.

It is also alleged that on the same day, Navuso wounded a staff nurse with a burnt beer bottle containing kerosene.

Police prosecutor objected to Navuso’s bail on the grounds that the nurse had sustained serious burns and was currently hospitalised.

The prosecutor also told the court that the offences the accused was charged indictable offence.

Magistrate Savou remanded the accused in custody and transferred the matter to the High Court.

The matter will be called for first call on March 1
