Tropical Depression 09F(TD09F) was located about 60km southwest of Kabara or about 170km north-northwest of Ono-i-Lau at midday today. Close to its centre TD09F is expected to have average winds of about 55km/hr with gust to about 80km/hr.

TD09F is currently moving south-southwest at 28km/hr, and the centre is expected to pass close to Ono-i-Lau around this afternoon and exit Fiji Waters by tonight.

The chances of TD09F becoming a tropical cyclone has diminished due to unfavourable conditions for further development.

Damaging gale force winds with average speeds of up to 65km/hr with gusts up to 90km/hr is expected to prevail over Vanua Balavu, Mago, Tuvuca, Cicia, Nayau, Lakeba, Vanuavatu, Moce, Vatoa, Kabara, Fulaga, Oneata and Ono-i-Lau.

Winds of this strength can cause damages to weak structures and houses of very light materials, crops and vegetation. Heavy rain and thunderstorm
will be experienced over these areas.

Meanwhile, state of the sea will be very rough to high seas. Moderate swells and breaking waves reaching the coastal areas may cause possible coastal inundation and sea flooding especially during high tide.

The Moala Group, Lomaiviti Group and western parts of Vanua Levu [from Dreketi through to Labasa to Udu Point] will have strong southwest to north-westerly winds with averages speeds of up to 50km/hr. Occasional rain, heavy at times and few thunderstorms to persist over these areas.

Occasional showers which may be heavy at times and thunderstorms is expected over the rest of the Fiji Group.

Persistent and high amounts of rainfall can lead to flooding of rivers, creeks and roads and flash flooding of low lying areas especially over the northern and eastern parts of the group.

Due to the heavy rain events in the past few weeks, soil in the ground is still moist and loose, this poses the risk of flash flood and landslides. Therefore, all communities living in flood and landslide prone areas need to remain vigilant and proactive.

Motorists are also advised of decreased visibility in areas of heavy rain and thunderstorms. Sea conditions are too dangerous for sea travel, sailing and other sea activities.

Members of the public are reminded to keep away from flooded drains, streams, creeks and rivers.

The wet weather conditions is expected to continue as the associated trough is expected to linger over the group even as TD09F continues to move southwards away from Fiji.

The current situation is closely monitored. Members of the public are advised to stay informed with latest weather updates and follow advice from local authorities.
