Team Looking At Legality In Ratu Naiqama’s Appointment: Gavoka

SODELPA leader Viliame Gavoka has confirmed that a team was looking into the legality of the appointment of the Leader of Opposition, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu.
However, Ratu Naiqama is adamant that his appointment was constitutional and claims that it is backed by the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.
When questioned on whether Ratu Naiqama’s appointment was unconstitutional and if the Caucus followed the party’s constitution to appoint him, Mr Gavoka said: “There’s some legal questions that I’m not able to answer right now.”
On Ratu Naiqama’s claim that the Speaker had ruled his appointment constitutional, Mr Gavoka said: “If that’s from the Speaker to the Leader of Opposition, that’s it. That’s two honourable people confirming that.”
Opposition Whip Lynda Tabuya reiterated that the Caucus had followed the constitution, which states that the parliamentary leader is chosen by members of the Caucus and the decision does not have to be unanimous.
She said Ratu Naiqama’s nomination as parliamentary leader was unopposed and later confirmed by the Speaker.
Questions sent to SODELPA General Secretary Emele Duituturaga remained unanswered.
