Lawrence Biuwale was just 15 when he dropped out of school from St Joseph the Worker in 2013.

But with the love and support from his mother and stepfather, Lawrence’s dream to study science in the hope of becoming a Math and Physics teacher was renewed.

It was reinforced yesterday when Lawrence, now 20, was badged yesterday as Nakasi High School head boy.

The Ketei, Totoya in Lau, lad said he could not hold back his tears when he was badged by his stepfather.

“My stepfather gave me all the love that a son deserves, and I cannot thank him enough for his support and motivation to come this far,” he said.

Lawrence said it was not easy to resume Year 9 at such a senior age and then progress to Year 13.

“My mother was my continuous supporter and motivator,” he said.

“She kept on telling me that despite being a dropout, this should never pull me back to achieve greater things in life.”

He was also inspired by the school principal, Praveen Chand, to start anew.

“Mr Chand was the very first person I met who accepted me in this school,” he said.

“My advice to students and school dropouts is to never lose hope.

“Never be ashamed of your age and never lose sight of your dreams.”

Lawrence scored 318 out of 400 in his Year 12 Certificate Examination. He is working to finish with good marks in Year 13 again this year.

Head girl

School head girl, Asenaca Naivadrakula, said she applauded the efforts of female prefects and saw each of them as ambassadors for women empowerment.

Asenaca hails from Natuvu, Cakaudrove, in Vanua Levu.

“I want to make a difference in my school and set a good example to my students,” she said.

She wants to become an architect.

“My cousin is an architect. I have admired her works and projects,” she said.

She scored 317 out of 400 in her Year 12 Certificate Examination.
