Mum’s Lack of opportunity pushes Naailah to aim high

After hearing the story shared by her mother of how she was limited to pursue a better education, Naailah Zahra Khan decided to fulfil her mother’s dream.
The Year 13 students was the top scorer for the Nadi Muslim College in last year’s Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination.
She scored 387 out of 400.
The 17-year-old said she was moved by her mother Roselyn Nisha Khan’s humble background.
“Mum didn’t have the opportunity to further her studies and strive for a profession because she was limited by my grandparents,” she said.
“After leaving high school she got married and started a family.
“Being a housewife, she shared how she had dreams that she wanted to achieve.
“She ensured that limitation doesn’t happen to me or my two younger siblings.”
Naailah’s father, who is a mechanic, would also encourage his children to do well academically.
“My dad always tells us to study hard and dream bigger than him,” she said.
“That is why I want to become a doctor and I think that was also my mother’s dream too.”
Naailah Zahra Khan’s Year 12 marks:
- 92 per cent in English
- 100 per cent in Math
- 97 per cent in Chemistry
- 98 per cent in Physics
