Let’s Go Local: Rakiraki For Local Fashion Designer
Local fashion designer Josaia Mateiwai.

Self-taught local artist and menswear fashion designer Josaia Niuvou Mateiwai is the owner and founder of LeNiu Art.

The Vatulele Nadroga man did not start with art until eight years ago.

Mr Mateiwai is very popular for his painting on tapa (rather than on canvas) masterpieces at recent local art exhibitions.

He recently launched his menswear clothing line mainly focusing on sulu vaka taga or as he calls it sulu vaka turaga (kilt-like garment).

“Awhile back I started to design my own clothes and put together pieces to wear to art exhibitions that I have attended.

“I attended as an artist but have been mistaken at times as a designer for menswear.

“I have even had people come up to me and ask should l put out a line, they would gladly order or would like to order for the guys in the family or knew of someone who would wear a floral or sparkly sulu vaka taga.Or as my good friend Alex Hill calls it sulu vakaturaga.” He added that because of his passion he has been allowed the opportunity to travel more than usual.

What’s one place you’d take every visitor to Fiji and why?

One place I would take a visitor to in Fiji is Rakiraki. The people in Rakiraki are just too friendly and they have some of the best views over the ocean with islands scattered on the horizon.

What’s your secret backyard favourite spot?

My secret backyard favourite spot is the beach with my playlist (gospel songs). And being around kids.

There is something about the way kids are carefree and joyous that grounds me.

What’s your favourite place in Fiji for a pie/coffee?

For coffee I would say hands down that it is The Coffee Hub in Nadi.

They serve the best coffee and have the most amazing cakes and pastries served in this amazing setting with the friendliest service staff.

What’s one Fiji spot on the top of your bucket list?

For my bucket list I would say that I would love to go on one of the Captain Cook Cruises to the Lau groups.

I have heard a lot about these islands, and they are hardly touched by developments or tourism and I would encourage people to try out these untouched parts of Fiji.
