Jasper Williams High School are using their interhouse competition to identify potential athletes.

JWHS athletics team interim manager Sainiana Satala said yesterday they were impressed with what they saw.

“We have faith in the ones that we have here, and we are looking forward to groom them,” she said.

“There’s no outside coaches but the teachers. We believe in each other and we can do it.”

Satala said intermediate girl’s middle distance runner Melaia Turaga is the only athlete that has joined them.

She ran in the 400 and 800 metres events.

Satala said some new students were able to equal the benchmark set by past students who had competed in the athletics team.

“We are getting their names down and then we are into our preparation for the zone. After the interhouse, the athletics committee will sit next week before starting preparations for the zone.”
