The 2020 TJ’s Golden Gloves National Boxing Championship will showcase Fiji’s best and most promising boxers at the Commander Stan Brown Boxing Gym in Walu Bay, Suva from February 26-27.

FABA president, Manasa Baravilala said, this was the largest national championship to date and for the first time ever, age group boxers (youths) would compete for gold, silver and bronze medals.

He said boxers qualified through a merit-based system, and qualification system that was established to encourage maximum participation and fairness to each boxer that participated at these fortnightly club competitions and were awarded points.

In addition to the medal awards, the Manu Koroi Memorial Awards for 2020 Coach of the Year, 2020 Women/ Youth Boxer of the Year, 2020 Male/ Junior Boxer of the Year is at stake.

Baravilala said the Brown family members in New Zealand and Fiji have donated the Commander Stanley Brown Memorial Trophy for ‘Outstanding Boxing Achievement for The Year’.

“It is awarded to the boxer who best exemplifies fairness, respect and excellence inside and outside the boxing ring and will be awarded for the first time in Fiji.”

The FABA board and its competition committee are grateful to Thomas Salvadore Johansen, owner of TJ’s and Café 30 for his sponsorship of this event which was postponed from last December due to Tropical Cyclone Yasa.

Baravilala said the event was sanctioned and organised by FABA.

Admission are $7 adults, school children $2, Under-6 free
