No Arrests Yet For Alleged Qelemumu Murder

Police are still investigating the alleged murder of the 49-year-old farmer in Qelemumu.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that a number of suspects were still being questioned, however no one was charged yet.

“The first suspect, who is in his late 20s, is still in custody with a few others,” she said.

Newal Kumar was found motionless a kilometre away from his home in Daramu, Qelemumu, outside of Labasa on February 13.

The victim’s son, Kushal Kumar, found his father’s body covered in mud on February 13. Kushal said his father had gone out to tie up the bull.

The grieving wife, Vidhya Wati, is still in a state of shock when she learned of his death.

She said the family had moved in with her younger daughter in Vunika.

“Now I am too scared to stay at my own home,” she said.

“My daughter and son-in-law are teachers, so during school terms I will be staying with them and during the school holidays I will visit my home,” she said.

“I still cannot believe that my husband is no more. I do not have anyone to share my thoughts with or to work in our farm; everything is taken away from me.”

The late Mr Kumar had a 40-acre land where he grew vegetables and sold at Labasa Market. He also planted sugarcane and raised livestock.
