Vishnava Reddy is a step closer to fulfilling his career of becoming an astrophysicist.

The intelligent 12-year-old was badged the head boy of Swami Shraddhanand Memorial (SSM) School in Nabua yesterday.

An astrophysicist studies the planets, the stars, other galaxies and objects in the universe.

Vishnava has a black belt in Taekwondo. He is currently learning boxing, and has been swimming since he was six years old. He is also a singer and plays the harmonium and piano.

Vishnava thanked his teachers for believing in him.

“This role means a lot to me and it shows that the teachers have confidence in me to lead the students this year,” Vishnava said.

“This role comes with a lot of responsibilities and I know that I can balance my new role with my studies.”

Parental engagement is key

His father, Mahendra Reddy said they were proud of their son and despite his busy schedule he made time for his children.

“Every child has a lot of hidden talents and skills, but it only gets revealed if you push them to engage in various activities. That is exactly what we did,” Mr Reddy said.

“During weekends, I spend most of my time with him. Parental engagement with their children is critical for child growth and development.

“Whenever I am in Suva, I check his homework, discuss what has been taught and help him out with questions in science and mathematics.”

Head girl Aradhana Sami said she dedicated her achievement to her dad.

The 13-year-old is the first in her family to be the head girl of a school.

“My dad is a bus driver, and he works hard to make sure that my siblings and I get what we want,” Aradhana said.

“My family both from my paternal and maternal side are very supportive and I want to thank them for their continuous support.

“I want to thank the teachers for always encouraging me to do my best.”
