The daily struggles faced at home by the Kalabu Primary School head boy Sakaraia Bukavesi Tuivaga has motivated him to do better in school.

The 13-year-old hails from Natokalau Village in Matuku, Lau with maternal links to Nasekula Village in Labasa.

Kalabu Primary School in Nasinu has a student roll of 656 students.

Sakaraia always planned to become the head boy; the first in his family.

“It is an honour to be a leader of this school. I want to thank my teachers for believing in me,” Sakaraia said.

“I know that there will be challenges but I know I can overcome them.

“I will plan my time well and be kind to all and I have to always be early to school and prioritise my studies.

“Coming from a very humble family who struggles a lot has taught me to be content with what I have and to work hard.”

Head girl follows sister’s footsteps

Head girl Esther Etasa Ledua said her new role comes with responsibilities and with the help of the deputies and prefects this year she should be able to cope with demands of her position.

The 13-year-old hails from Waitabu Village in Lakeba, Lau with maternal links to Lovoni Village in Ono-i-Lau, Lau.

“My older sister was a head girl too, so she has set an example for me,” Esther said.

“This role comes with a lot of responsibilities and sacrifices and I know I can do it because I am hardworking and responsible.

“The struggle that I face at home has motivated me to work very hard and achieve my dreams.

“I want to thank my parents, sister and teachers for always encouraging me to do better.”

70 students were badged last Friday.
