Fiji’s economic recovery is far too important to be politicised, says Attorney-General and Minister of Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Addressing the public on social media for the first 2021-2022 online national budget consultation, Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the government would do its best to clear misconceptions and cut through some of the political noise.

“In this online consultation for 2021-2022 national budget, we will be taking feedback from all Fijians of all ages,” he said.

“Whether it’s regarding employment, education, investments, economic incentives, government borrowing or any other issue on your mind.

“The facts matter, and that is what this consultation is all about.”

He said the next budget would still focus on the COVID-19 pandemic.

“From the start of this crisis, we took decisive actions to cushion the financial blows due to the restrictions on travel.

“Months on, we are now focused on the procurement of vaccines that counter the virus should allow borders to safely reopen.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said while health at the onset of COVID-19 pandemic was important, there was a need to bring the economy fully back to life.

“That begins in securing Fiji’s place, to what our Prime Minister, Frank Bainimarama has rightly called, the most important economic recovery of our lifetimes.”

He said budget consultations had shifted to online platforms in the recent years for the convenience of the Fijian public.

The online national budget consultation 2021-2022 will be held tomorrow, February 28.
