Sangam Sadhu Kuppuswamy Memorial College (SSKMC) head girl, Ria Dipashna Devi and head boy Dushant Singh.

Shyness was a barrier that Dushant Singh had overcome in his early age and now with confidence he has taken up the challenge to be the head boy.

Dushant and Ria Dipashna Devi were badged head prefects of Sangam Sadhu Kuppuswamy Memorial College (SSKMC) in Nadi.

The 17-year-old said when he was in Year Five, he was a school prefect.

“At that level I was so shy, and it was difficult for me to take up that responsibility. After that year, I promised myself that I will never hold any leadership role in my school years again.

He said with encouragement and motivation from teachers and friends he took up the leadership role again in Year 10.

“I overcame my fears and took up the challenges and until today I am confident to take any responsibility that is given to me.

Head girl, Ria, was not only badged but was also awarded a laptop as a prize for being the highest scorer in the school. She was also recognised for being the third highest scorer in Fiji for the 2020 Year 12 Certificate Examination.

The 17-year-old said it would be difficult to balance leadership with academics but through the support of parents and the school anything was possible.

“This leadership role won’t be easy however this institution helps students advance their capabilities in all areas.”
