The Bridge is where I started and Commander is where I will end, said the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces top officer, Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto.

Thursday, March 4, is when his contract as the Commander of the military is expected to end after being in command for five years and eight months.

While he could not say whether the contract would be renewed or otherwise he said: “I am happy and looking forward to the 4th of March.

“I have no plans after the 4th of March but I am looking forward to where God will direct me.”

Rear Admiral Naupoto said he was retiring on a high note after the RFMF North tour and seeing the smiles on students’ faces who received their pair of shoes and uniforms.

Commander Naupoto has spent 39 years in the service, eight years in the private sector and also serving Government as Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Fisheries and the Office of the Prime Minister.

“The highlight of my career is seeing the smiling faces of people especially when they’re happy doing their job,” he said.

“I would rather experience the pain, if there is any, than being vulnerable and having a thick skin.”

He credited all the men and women in the force who had been working on the frontline keeping Fiji safe from the COVID-19 pandemic including response teams during natural disasters.

Rear Admiral Naupoto said while the COVID-19 positive cases on Fiji’s border worried him, he was grateful that his personnel were safe.

“It has been the best time to be holding this position,” he said.
