Nadi based Dhiraj Nadan took out gold in the Under 19 grade of the 2nd McDonalds Fiji Junior Squash tournament 2021 held at the Nadi Sports Club last Saturday.

Suva based Susan Rafai and Ruth Batabua settled for silver and bronze respectively in the one-day event.

The event was organised by Squash Fiji and sponsored by McDonalds Fiji, the tourney attracted 54 squash juniors from Suva, Nadi, and Lautoka competing in six grades (U9, U11, U13, U15, U17, U19).

Squash Fiji President Blair Macaskill said, “We were pleased with the turnout but expected a good number after interest grew from our first junior tourney in Suva last month. Prior to this year, Fiji has not had a junior tourney in over 10 years.”

“It is not as simple as just having a tournament, you need players first and we didn’t have that say two years back. We have worked hard to set up junior programmes and put coaches in place to run them and now have sessions running in Suva, Nadi, Lautoka, and Savusavu with a player base that we can grow,” he said.

Macaskill added that SF is also extremely grateful to their junior partner McDonalds Fiji for their continued support of the development of the sport in Fiji.

The tourney ended with an exhibition match between Fiji’s No.1 women player Allison Yee and Fiji’s number one junior player Mahima Goonesekera, who are both top-ranked A-Graders.

“Many of our juniors are new to squash so it’s good for them to see an A-Grade match as well. Also, its important we have role models in our sport that they can look up to and aspire towards” said Macaskill.
