KPMG Called In Over Report On USP Jobs
Front page of the Fiji Sun on February 20, 2021.

An investigation is being done at the University of the South Pacific (USP) to find out what is really going on, following revelations of nepotism and other allegations.

USP Pro Vice Chancellor Winston Thompson confirmed the investigation and financial challenges.

These challenges could possibly lead to redundancies and job losses, which may come in the form of the reorganisation.

The investigations came to light after the Fiji Sun revealed a number of alleged discrepancies in the university’s internal operations through well-placed sources.

Mr Thompson said: “We have an investigation done by KPMG; it is not fully in respect to items that have been appearing in the media.

“There has been so much media coverage that we need to get an independent view and information.”

Mr Thompson said the university was not closing down even though it had financial challenges.

“The university has financial challenges right now, but that’s another story,” he said.

“We are trying to deal with the normal mechanisms of each of the committees and through the council and the process is ongoing.

“The university has gone through reorganisation and is still in the process of settling through that, but the main point is that the year, which commenced this week has gone very well and good numbers of students are enrolling.

“On that note the USP has got off to a good start in 2021.”
