The landowning unit of Denarau Island, the Y3 Gopher Trust hosted its annual general meeting for the first time in four decades.

More than 200 members from the Yavusa e Tolu, Navatulevu, Sila, and Noi Yakuilau (three tribes) of Narewa, Nadi met at the Sofitel Fiji Resort on Denarau on Wednesday.

Y3 Gopher Trust business development director, Sekove Tuilakeba said: “This is a historic moment for the Yavusa e Tolu. To come together and be transparent and accountable.

“We have been in the wilderness for 45 years, since Denarau opened its first resort, Regent of Fiji couple of decades ago.”

He thanked the current Tui Nadi Ratu Vuniyani Navuniuci for his vision and wisdom to bring the Y3 beneficiaries together.

He said they were mindful that their resources were quite wealthy in terms of its commercial value (tourism).

“This is our first year in operation and we are very fortunate to have a leader with such a vision and powerful advocate on wellbeing, education and empowerment of women and youths,” he said.

Roko Tui Nadi Iosevo Vereivalu and staff of ITaukei Land Trust Board (iTLTB) were also present at the AGM.

Mr Vereivalu praised the vision of the trust to reach this juncture.

“I applaud the committee and the trust chairman for his leadership as this is the first time to see such a landowning unit come together, sit down and go through this forum, the AGM,” he said.

“This is because of the leadership and this kind of mechanism should be replicated all over Fiji for the i-taukei community since there is an abundance of resources.

“This is the way to help and having transparency in good leadership and good governance. This is what the Ministry of i-Taukei is all about.”
