A traditional welcome awaited the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto on Yadua Island as he completed his Northern Division tour on Wenesday.

While accepting the traditional presentation of the Ivakasobu, Rear Admiral Naupoto said he did not expect the acknowledgment that was befitting for a chief.

A mat and salusalu was prepared by Rear Admiral Naupoto’s niece Vakabauta Talemaiamerika Natuilagilagi, a school teacher at the island school.

“My mum is cousins with Commander and they grew up together on Vatoa’s Island,” Mrs Natuilagilagi said.

“It is an emotional time for us. It is after a very long time then I get to meet my uncle again.

“The mat is a token of appreciation for his service from my family.

“I knew him when I was very little while growing in Suva because he would visit my mum and take us for lunch.

“His arrival today, has brought so much joy to the children of Yadua. We had nothing when school started this year, but now through kind donations the kids have each received a pair of shoes and uniform,” she said.

Mrs Natuilagilagi thanked the donors and the RFMF for their thoughtful donation. They donated 30 pairs of shoes and uniforms.

Rear Admiral Naupoto encouraged the students to work hard because they’re the future leaders of the nation.

He said he was delighted to be reaching out to children who were affected by tropical cyclones.
