Australia Welcomes Arrival Of COVID-19 Vaccines

Australia welcomed the arrival of 12,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses last night, the first of over 100,000 to be delivered to Fiji through the COVAX Facility.

“There is no higher priority for countries in our Pacific region than access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines,” said Australian High Commissioner to Fiji John Feakes, who joined Prime Minister Bainimarama, Health Minister Waqainabete, UN Resident Coordinator Samarasinha and fellow High Commissioners and Ambassadors in Nadi for the vaccines’ arrival.

“These first COVID-19 vaccines will be critical to safeguarding the health of Fijians, and to ensuring Fiji’s economic recovery and region’s stability.”

“It’s a testament to Fiji’s strong health system and to the committed women and men who work within it that Fiji is the first recipient in the Pacific of COVID-19 vaccines through COVAX. Australia is proud to be both a COVAX contributor and a longstanding health partner of Fiji.”

Australia advocated strongly to ensure countries in the Pacific had access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines though COVAX. Australia has also contributed A$80 million to the initiative to ensure healthcare workers and vulnerable groups in our region have timely access.

Australia’s support is in addition to our A$523.2 million COVID-19 Vaccine Access and Health Security Initiative for the Pacific and Southeast Asia.

About COVAX

The COVAX Facility, a global vaccine sharing initiative, has allocated an initial 100,800 doses to Fiji. One million doses are expected to be delivered to the Pacific by June 2021. Further allocations will be announced later this year to ensure all eligible countries have sufficient doses to vaccinate up to 20 per cent of their populations.

The COVAX Facility pursues equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines and the doses will be delivered to partners in our region in parallel with the roll-out of vaccines in Australia. In this pandemic, no-one is safe until everyone is.

The COVAX Facility is a unique global collaboration that pools risk and purchasing power to facilitate viability of a diverse range of COVID-19 vaccines across the globe. The Facility is co-led by the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, Gavi and the World Health Organization, alongside key delivery partner UNICEF.
