Residents of Nadera fear that crime would soar again after Police removed their Special Response Mobile Unit yesterday.

Police spokesperson Savaira Tabua confirmed that the container with surveillance and monitoring capabilities has now been placed in Mead Road.

Ashneet Pande’s shop was broken into four weeks ago and soon after complaints were lodged, the Mobile Unit was placed there.

“When the Police set up, I noticed the criminal activity around the area drop,” Mr Pande said.

Thieves broke into his shop, took groceries, cigarettes and other items. This was captured by the surveillance cameras inside. The camera on the outside was broken.

Mr Pande said he had billiard tables on the porch of the shop. He said dealing and smoking of marijuana would take place, despite the many times he had objected.

“My fear is that with the mobile unit gone, all activities which had ceased would start again,” Mr Pande said.

Jiuta Batiwale of Visako Circle said the Mobile Unit also gave residents a sense of safety.

“We are thankful to the Police for the four weeks they were here. I hope they think about increasing numbers at the Police Post,” he said.

“Most times there is only one officer on duty.”

He said he, like many residents, was concerned with criminal activities in the area. Ms Tabua said the Mobile Unit would be posted at locations based on operational needs and also in a bid to address concerns raised by members of the public.
