Being inducted as head girl of Saint Thomas High School was an emotional moment for Asilika Qoro, who dedicated her appointment to the parents she never knew.

Asilika lost her mother and father when she was a toddler, so she has no memories of them.

The 17-year-old could only wish they were there to see their daughter badged. The Viwa, Yasawa teenager was however, thankful that the school management that elected her to take up the leading role at the Lautoka-based school.

When she was only four-months-old, she lost her dad and when she turned four-years-old, she lost her mother and is currently being cared for by her aunt, Apisaki Camaitoga.

“I feel blessed to be given this opportunity as head girl,” she said.

“This badge comes with a lot of responsibilities and since the school roll has increased this year, it only means that I need to work harder and help instill discipline in the students.”

Asilika said despite being a victim of bullying and being criticised by the outside world, prayer and motivational words from her family kept her going.

“I am often bullied and criticised on by others, but I am always encouraged by my family and so I was able to overlook it,” she said.

She has plans to enter the medical field.

Meanwhile, school head boy, Rafaele Roqica, 17, had always been inspired by his parents, who are teachers, to strive for excellence in life.

“Both my parents, who are teachers have, inspired me to do well in life and that can only be done through prayer,” he said.

“I will do my duty diligently as the head boy to help the school grow academically.”

The pair will be helped by the deputy head girl, Lilineoba Basali and deputy head boy, Timoci Vakacereibau and the assistant head girl, Faith Williams and assistant head boy, Samuela Ledua.
