The Suva City Council (SCC) was able to collect 74 per cent of its rates by the end of February and this was attributed to its honest and reliable ratepayers.

Suva and Lami special administrator chair Isikeli Tikoduadua said they were grateful to the ratepayers of Suva who paid their rates in full.

“This is reciprocated by the Council in providing the best service we can. And the ratepayers know the importance of paying their rates,” he said.

Suva City Council has collected almost $7.5 million in rates for the financial year ending on July 31 and has been able to recover $600,000 unpaid rates which were in arrears.

Mr Tikoduadua said Lami Town Council had been able to collect 65 per cent of their rates for the same financial period.

He said ratepayers who would pay their rates in full before the end of March were entitled to a four per cent discount.

He added the Council cashier hours were extended to 5.30pm on weekdays and it was open on Saturdays from 8am to 1pm.
