Leadership starts from home, says Labasa Sangam SKM College head boy, Natheniel Jarick Petueli.

“Listening to your parents is key,” Natheniel said of his leadership role.

“When you become a leader, you should look ahead and don’t think about anything else.

“There will be tough times where you will lose your friends.

“That should not affect your leadership when you put God first.

“I know that the prefects will help me in carrying out our duties.

“It won’t be easy but we hope that the students will co-operate with us,” he said.

The 17-year-old is following in his father’s footsteps who was the head boy of Labasa College in the 1980s.

Head girl

Fahima Bi, the highest scorer for the Fiji Year 12 Examination made the school and her family proud when she was announced the head girl.

The aspiring doctor said she never expected to be given the role.

“When I was in Year 9, my academic performance and self-confidence was not that good,” the youngest of four siblings said.

“But when I came to Year 10, I realised that I have the capability.

“So I started taking up leadership roles and became the only senior prefect in Year 11.

“When I was offered the head girl post this year, I did not refuse.

“We have to be polite with the students because they’re our colleagues.

“We are not above them or lower than them.

“We will deal with different kinds of students from different backgrounds.

“We have to be polite but firm as fire can’t stop fire with water.

There are 782 students at the school and 87 prefects.
