Follow Rules Under Law To Sell Food On Streets: Council

The Suva City Council is pushing for the effective management of cooked food sold to the public.

This is after a number of reports were highlighted about alleged food poisoning emanating from food bought from street sellers.

Suva and Lami special administrator, Isikeli Tikoduadua, said there was a noted increase in the number of requests for proper management of the sale of cooked food.

Mr Tikoduadua said anyone wishing to sell cooked food in Suva, needed the approval from various authorities including the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA).

“There needs to be a consideration of a Health Licence from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services under the Food Safety Act,” he said.

“The consideration of a Fire Permit License from the National Fire Authority (NFA) under the National Fire Act.

“And an Occupational Health and Safety Licence from the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations.”

Mr Tikoduadua said these were requirements under the law.

He said for the safety of the public it was imperative that all food and drink for sale followed the Food Safety Act.

He said the council was working closely with NFA, the Ministry of Health, FRA and the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations to manage street food sales.
