The Suva Rugby Union yesterday received more to assist in organising weekly club competitions

Union president and Commander Navy (Capt) Humphrey Tawake made the comment after renewing their sponsorship deal with mobile giant Digicel.

Digicel sponsored $12,000 for the operations of the SRU for the next three years. The deal was sealed at the company’s headquarters in Nabua, Suva yesterday.

The competition will be called the Digicel Koroturaga Championship and the Digicel Escott Shield.

“Organising the weekly games is not an easy task,” he said.

“We have to cater for the cost of the grounds, the medical people and the referees.

“The increase of this sponsorship from Digicel is timely as well as more clubs would join Suva. In total we will have 50 teams participating in the club games.

“This partnership will remain and it will grow stronger in the next two years and we are looking forward to a great season of rugby.

“The sponsorship comes in very handy early on in the season and their assistance helped us last year in winning the Skipper Cup Premiership.”

Digicel chief executive officer Farid Mohammed is happy to renew the deal.

“Last year we started our partnership with Suva Rugby for their Koroturaga Championship and Koroturaga Shield competition,” he said.

“We are delighted to have joined hands with Suva to bring grassroots rugby during tough times.

“We are happy to continue for the next two years.

“Last year we gave $10,000 so this year we are increasing it to $12,000.”
