The seven-year-old girl, whose body was exhumed by Police in Toko, Tavua, on Wednesday, was a member of a church group which does not believe in medicine.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said: “According to information gathered, the victim was allegedly sick for the last three months but was never taken for medical treatment as it went against their religious beliefs.

“The victim passed away on the 23rd of February whereby a decision was made not to report the matter to the Police or to take the victim’s body to the hospital.”

According to neighbours the family of the girl occupied land belonging to the church which is said to have debatable religious doctrines.

Her parents refused to comment.

Neighbour, Makelesi Savui, claimed that the child’s family was very conservative and kept to themselves.

Ms Savui claimed that a few days ago she saw an elderly man crying on the roadside. She suspected that this was when the girl died.

She claimed that she saw the Police taking the father of the child for questioning on Thursday night and also examining the gravesite.

Another neighbour claimed that she was the fourth child to have died in the span of almost three months in the area.
